Garrett will work closely with Littleton and Schneider in developing news and feature stories for all Variety platforms. She will help plan coverage of TV-related news and events and help manage Variety’s growing team of reporters who cover television.

Schneider’s elevation comes as the Variety veteran takes on expanded responsibilities for steering coverage of news and features, with an emphasis on TV-related pop culture, movers and shakers and rising stars in the creative community.

As TV awards chief, Schneider oversees awards coverage and pens the weekly Awards HQ newsletter. He also co-hosts and produces Variety’s weekly “Awards Circuit” podcast.

“Mike and Diane are Variety veterans who have the experience and the insights to thrive in these leadership roles,” said Littleton. “They both have a passion for television that is crucial for driving coverage of an industry in the throes of transition. Diane has excelled in a range of different roles during her years at Variety. Mike delivers for us every day with his keen instincts about the industry and his trademark humor.”

Garrett first joined Variety in 2002, working as a copy editor and film and digital reporter. She also served as events editor over two award-season cycles. She also worked for several startups, including AOL’s Patch, and her writing has also appeared in the L.A. Times. Earlier in her career, Garrett worked for TV Guide and Movieline. She rejoined Variety as an editor in 2018.

As TV awards chief, Schneider oversees awards coverage and pens the weekly Awards HQ newsletter. He also co-hosts and produces Variety’s weekly “Awards Circuit” podcast, writes the “Awards Circuit” column and regularly breaks news in the TV awards arena.

Schneider joined Variety in 1999, and eventually served as TV editor, a post he held until his departure in 2011. He moved to TV Guide Magazine, where he rose to chief content officer and helped launch the website TV Insider. In 2016, he returned to Variety as an editor at large. Schneider is also a contributor to Southern California-based public radio station KCRW, where he co-hosts the segment “Screengrab.”

Schneider regularly moderates industry panels with execs, showrunners and talent at events including San Diego Comic-Con, PaleyFest, the HRTS, NATPE, PromaxBDA, and countless other events, and regularly appears on TV and radio to discuss pertinent entertainment business topics. He began his career at the weekly trade newspaper Electronic Media (later known as Television Week) in 1995.
