A Belarusian court sentenced an anti-government protester to 10 years in prison on Thursday, media and activists said, on charges that the opposition says were trumped up as part of a crackdown to keep President Alexander Lukashenko in power. Aliaksandr Kardziukou was convicted of attempted murder for attacking security forces who were trying to disperse nationwide protests that erupted last August following a contested election that extended Lukashenko's rule since 1994. Kardziukou denied wrongdoing, according to local media reports, saying he was confronted by two plain clothes security forces who pulled a gun on him in the city of Brest and killed another protester, Henadz Shutau, as they tried to escape.

The acting chief of the U.S. Capitol Police is testifying before Congress on Thursday as lawmakers press for answers about intelligence and procedural failures that allowed thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump to storm the Capitol last month. Yogananda Pittman and the acting House sergeant-at-arms, Timothy Blodgett, faced questions from members of a House subcommittee investigating the riot on Jan. 6, when rioters invaded the Capitol aiming to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s election victory over Trump. Pittman planned to tell lawmakers that Capitol Police knew there was a possibility that armed extremist poised for violence could be heading to the Capitol that day, but the invasion was worse than expected and law enforcement was unprepared.
Best Buy said Thursday that it laid off 5,000 full-time store workers earlier this month, even as the company's sales soared during the pandemic as homebound people bought laptops, TVs and other gadgets. Best Buy said it will replace the 5,000 full-time employees with 2,000 part-time workers. Best Buy's workforce has shrunk in the last year after having to furlough workers when it closed stores during the pandemic.
Armenia's prime minister is calling for his supporters to rally for him, and is warning of an attempted military coup, after the army demanded his resignation.Protests and counter-protests appeared in the capital shortly afterwards on Thursday (February 25).It's not immediately clear if if the army is willing to use force to make Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resign, along with the rest of his administration, or whether it was just talk. But the leader has faced calls to quit for months over his handling of the devastating military conflict it fought with Azerbaijan last year, and the army in a written statement said, quote, "the serious mistakes in foreign policy have put the country on the brink of collapse."Thousands of people are believed to have died in the fighting with Azerbaijan, where ethnic Armenians lost huge areas of territory to Azeri forces.Thursday's development has also alarmed Russia, which has a military base in Armenia, and has peacekeepers watching the region. It's calling for calm and for Armenians to work within their constitution. Turkey, which supported Azerbaijan during the conflict, is also condemning the move. The Turkish government says coups are unacceptable, no matter where they take place.
Morocco plans to allow the farming, export and domestic sale of cannabis for medical and industrial use, the government said on Thursday, a move it hopes will help impoverished farmers in the Rif mountains amid a growing legal global market for the drug. Past attempts to legalise cannabis farming in Morocco have failed, but the co-ruling PJD party, the largest in parliament, dropped its opposition after the U.N. drug agency removed the plant from its list of most tightly controlled narcotic drugs. The bill, which the cabinet is expected to approve next week, aims to improve farmers' incomes, protect them from drug traffickers who now control the trade in cannabis and gain access to the booming legal international market for the drug.
Best Buy is signaling a slowdown. The electronics retailer that saw strong demand for computing equipment amid the stay-at-home trend said Thursday it was – in its words – “difficult to predict how sustainable these trends will be.” Best Buy’s CFO forecast comparable sales growth for the full year would range between a drop of 2% to a gain of 1%. Earlier this week, two other retailers whose sales shot up during the health crisis - Home Depot and Lowe’s - stayed away from providing specific forecasts. Best Buy’s sobering forecast comes after sales surged as people stuck at home set up home offices and students switched to remote learning. That drove up demand for laptops, webcams, and other computer accessories last year. That sales drive continued in the holiday quarter helped by demand for new gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft. But the momentum slowed markedly. The nearly 13% rise in comparable sales amounted to nearly half of the jump recorded in the previous quarter. Same-store sales as well as total revenue missed Wall Street’s expectations. But it appears the company is making a bet on digital sales. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the company has been laying off workers and cutting hours for some store workers as it adapts to the shift to e-commerce. Best Buy’s online sales nearly doubled in the latest quarter, making up 43% of U.S. sales. Shares fell in early Thursday trading.
Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has been moved from a prison in Moscow, his lawyer said on Thursday, a move that may mean he is being moved to a prison camp outside the Russian capital. Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, was jailed earlier this month over alleged parole violations related to an embezzlement case he said was trumped up for political reasons, something the authorities deny. Vadim Kobzev, one of his lawyers, announced on Twitter that Navalny had been moved from a Moscow jail.
Fires that appear to have been deliberately set destroyed more than 500 structures this week in and around Ethiopia's Gijet town, an analysis of satellite imagery shared with Reuters has found, adding credence to reports of continued conflict in parts of the northern region of Tigray. Three New Jersey State Troopers rescued a 14-year-old boy who was stuck waist deep in frigid water in a marsh in Alloway Township, Salem County. On Sunday, February 21, at approximately 11:28 p.m., Sergeant Carl Scowcroft, Trooper Matthew Hess, and Trooper Thomas Rheault were dispatched to the report of a 14-year-old boy who ran away from his residence and got stuck in a marsh near Sawmill Road. When troopers arrived to the area, they entered the water and discovered the trapped boy, who was breathing slowly and was unresponsive. Due to the frigid temperature of the water, Sgt. Scowcroft made a determination that he needed to take immediate action to save the boy’s life, so he quickly made his way through the mud as Troopers Hess and Rheault kept their flashlights trained on the victim. Sgt. Scowcroft pulled the boy out of the marsh and began to carry him towards the shoreline. At the time of the rescue, the victim exhibited signs of hypothermia. A short time later, members of the Alloway Township Fire Rescue arrived and entered the water to assist. Troopers Rheault and Hess then secured the boy to a backboard and carried him up the embankment. Alloway Township EMS evaluated the victim and transported him to Salem Memorial Hospital where he was expected to make a full recovery. Check out this video clip of the rescue.
