Valerie Bertinelli hasn't read Alex Van Halen's book because she knows it's 'going to be emotional'
"They are good men and they are very complicated men," says Bertinelli, who was married to Eddie Van Halen.
Valerie Bertinelli is waiting until she feels ready to read Alex Van Halen’s new book.
The One Day at a Time actress, who was married to Alex’s brother Eddie Van Halen for over 25 years, revealed on Thursday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that she has yet to dig into his book Brothers despite it being released last month because she knows it’s going to be a particularly moving read.
“It’s going to be emotional,” Bertinelli explained. “It’s going to be very emotional, because I love these two men. They are good men and they are very complicated men. Congratulations, Al, going to be a bestseller.”

Released on Oct. 22, Brothers chronicles the relationship between Alex and Eddie, from their childhood to sharing the stage as members of the Grammy-winning rock band Van Halen. Even without reading it, Bertinelli noted that Alex did an “amazing job” of weaving their stories into a poignant tribute to his younger brother, who died of cancer at 65 in 2020.
“When I talked to Al last year — when he told me he was writing the book — I was super excited for him, and we had a long conversation about grief and what you go through,” she said. “I know that Al, he has gone through... he’s a very private man, and for him to do this is extraordinary. And to do it so beautifully — I’m so proud of you, Al. I’m so happy that you wrote your story.”
Bertinelli revealed that the book also provides readers with a real insight into Eddie was as a "man, and not the icon or whatever you may think you know about him."
She continued, “He was not that. He was a gentle, gentle soul who went through extreme trauma and Al did, too. I’m so excited to read it, it’s been sitting in my house now and I’m just shaking just thinking about it because I know them very well.”

Bertinelli, who is mom to son Wolfgang Van Halen, previously expressed that she finds it difficult to look back at her relationship with the influential guitarist after watching her son reflect on his and his father's legacy in an episode of Behind The Music in April.
"After Ed died, I was more than willing to put myself in the 'grieving widow' category for a man that I hadn’t lived with for 20 years,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “What we had together was this beautiful son that we both unconditionally loved. That’s what I got out of that marriage: Wolfie, the best thing that ever happened to me. Not a soulmate.”
Brothers is out now. Watch Bertinelli reflect on the book in the clip above.
