KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (UTMKL) has created history as the first institution of higher learning to be appointed as tithe collection agent of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) following a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed today.
PPZ-MAIWP chief executive officer Ahmad Shukri Yusoff said the appointment of UTM as its 34th tithe collection agent was aimed at facilitating the Muslim community especially educators in the federal capital to pay tithe.
"Individuals and corporations including educators can continue to pay tithe at the available counters and to help, among others, poor UTMKL students," he told reporters after the MOA signing ceremony and opening of tithe payment counter here.
Meanwhile, UTMKL vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar said the MOA and the counter would benefit at least 40 per cent of UTMKL students who are poor.
"Through this partnership, MAIWP will return 37.5 per cent of the total amount of tithe collected through the counter to be distributed to some of our eligible students and also allowing us to double the aid programmes to the community around the campus," he said.
