The wife of a missing Utah National Guardsman is accused of murdering him and trying to cover up the crime.

Matthew Johnson was reported missing on Sept. 23, Fox 13 reported. A member of the Utah National Guard, Johnson did not show up to work that day, according to a report from Gephardt Daily

Fox 13, Gephardt Daily and KUTV, citing a probable cause affidavit, reported that the next day, Johnson’s estranged wife Jennifer Gledhill, went to the Cottonwood Heights Police Department to report an incident between her and Johnson a few days before.

KUTV reported that Johnson’s children had stopped hearing from their father on Sept. 21 and that his phone would go directly to voicemail.

Court records indicate that Gledhill had filed for divorce in July and filed for a protective order in August, which was dismissed in September after a court ruled that she did not prove that abuse occurred, KUTV reported.

The three outlets all reported that on Sept. 28, a confidential informant told police that Gledhill admitted to killing Johnson by shooting him in the head while he slept, according to the affidavit.

Johnson was sleeping when he was shot, the informant reportedly said.

The informant said Gledhill then allegedly admitted to moving Johnson’s body and burying it in a shallow grave, Fox 13 reported, before removing and destroying items in the home.

After police obtained search warrants to search the couple’s home, they allegedly found a blood-stained spot on the carpet under the bed in the master bedroom, Gephardt Daily reported.

Johnson’s body has still not been found.

Salt Lake County jail records indicate that Gledhill is currently in custody, being held on charges of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

It is not immediately clear if Gledhill has been formally charged by prosecutors or if she has entered a pleas.
