A winner of The Voice US has pulled through and expected to recover after being shot in the stomach and airlifted to hospital.

American country singer Sundance Head, who won the reality series in 2016, is currently in a "stable" condition in a Texas hospital, reports the Sun.

His wife Misty Head later confirmed that he has not needed surgery to remove the bullet and will shortly be released from hospital.

His agent Trey Newman told the New York Post that it is unclear how the shooting came about, although it is thought Head was out hunting when it happened.

He said: “It missed all vital organs. It was not self-inflicted.

“We don’t know if it was an accident with his gun or if it was another hunter nearby.

“The bullet is lodged in some fatty tissue, and the only way it could have happened is if it travelled through something else.”

The 46-year-old has enjoyed a steady career since appearing on American Idol in 2007 and then The Voice nine years later.

He has released four albums but has never been a household name in the UK.

The accident happened on Head’s estate, reports the Post, and he is said to be a fan of shooting and hunting.

Misty, his wife, wrote on Facebook that he is now expected to be released and recover.

"Well since no surgery to remove the bullet (safer to leave in per trauma) they are releasing him… really thankful for the care I’m concerned they are releasing him so soon,” she said.

“He’s already bleeding out of where the wound is and there are no antibiotics or pain meds being sent home.”

She added: “Again very thankful for the care as well as all of y’all’s prayers!

“I’ve received tons of texts and calls. I will get to them. It’s so crazy, seven hours ago he was life flighted and now being released.. continued prayers for quick recovery.”
