This Is Us star Ron Cephas Jones and The Outsider actor Jason Bateman have become the latest victims of an awkward awards show mix-up, as an error was made during the broadcast of the fifth and final night of the 2020 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

This year's Creative Arts Emmys were held virtually across several nights, with the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards taking place virtually tonight (September 2020).

But while the winner of the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series award was being announced during the final Creative Arts Emmys broadcast, there was a rather confusing mistake which saw two different actors announced as the winner simultaneously.

As a voiceover announced The Outsider's Jason Bateman's name, a card declaring Ron Cephas Jones as the winner for his work on This Is Us was displayed at the same time.

So who actually won? It has been confirmed that Cephas Jones is the correct recipient, with the awards broadcast correcting the mistake a few minutes after the confusing moment.

The Wrap reports that a spokesperson for the Emmys issued a statement confirming that an "editing issue" had occurred and that Cephas Jones is definitely the winner, saying: "They announced the correct winner and it was the correct slate, but the voiceover was incorrect".

The Television Academy's Twitter account also confirmed that Cephas Jones has been awarded his second win for his role as William 'Shakespeare' Hill on This Is Us.

As the stars weren't actually in the room for the ceremony we didn't have a repeat of that now infamous 2017 Oscars mistake, which saw the cast and crew of La La Land having to leave the stage after they were mistakenly announced as the winners of Best Picture when the trophy was actually meant to be awarded to Moonlight.

The 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards will host the final virtual ceremony of the year tonight, with awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Drama Series and Lead and Supporting Actor gongs being handed out.

Winners of the 2020 Creative Emmys include Queer Eye, which has been named Outstanding Structured Reality Program, Saturday Night Live, which has picked up Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, and Rick and Morty, which has won Outstanding Animated Program.

The Mandalorian has picked up seven awards, including Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Special Visual Effects. Watchmen has also scored seven including Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special.
