U.S. Open: Matsuyama busts belt, scorecard to start second round
TORREY PINES, Calif. — After one round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, Hideki Matsuyama was close to holding a share of the lead. After one hole on Friday, he had to worry about holding up his pants.
Matsuyama, who rode an impressive Saturday and Sunday in April to a Masters win, improved his overnight odds to win the U.S. Open to +1600, the level of Brooks Koepka before the tournament began. But with one swing, he undid all that good work, bursting his belt on the very first hole he played:

Matsuyama managed to locate another belt — for the record, a slightly more beige one — but that didn't stop his plummet down the leaderboard, from -2 to +4 in the space of four holes. That was enough to obliterate his chances; he's now at 100-1 odds to win, per BetMGM.
No matter how his week at Torrey Pines turns out, Matsuyama remains ahead of the fashion game for 2021. Nobody cares what your belt looks like when you're wearing a green jacket.
