KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) information chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali could make a comeback as Selangor menteri besar if he wins the coming state election due this year.

PN election machinery deputy director Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi said Azmin’s experience in leading Selangor from 2014 to 2018 would help the coalition win the state election, New Straits Times reported yesterday.

“There is always an opportunity for Azmin [to lead Selangor] if he succeeds in winning the state legislative assembly,” he was quoted as saying.

But Zulkafperi, who is also Tanjong Karang MP, said it was up to the PN leadership on who to lead its Selangor election campaign.

He was upbeat about PN’s chances in the Selangor polls and believes it could win 33 of the 56 seats, claiming there was growing support from younger voters based on social media feedback.

“I am confident that PN will be able to capture Selangor through the unification of the ummah between Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and PAS,” he was quoted as saying.

But he also admitted that Azmin, who is the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman, could have difficulties if the latter decides to defend his state seat.

“This is because Malay voters are less than 50 per cent and it could be difficult. We do not rule out the possibility of him staying or choosing another state assembly that may side with PN,” Zulkafperi was quoted as saying.
