United Airlines Is Raising Checked-Bag Fees—Here's How to Avoid Them
If you hate lugging heavy bags when traveling, now you have another reason to pack lightly because United Airlines is raising its checked-baggage fees.
According to USA Today, the checked-baggage fee has increased by $5. Starting March 6, the first bag you check is $35 both ways and the second bag is $45 each way. If you bought a ticket before Friday, February 21, you’ll be exempt from the price increase. The increase will extend to flights in the United States as well as shorter flights to the Caribbean and Latin America.
United Airlines’s price increase follows the same move made by JetBlue Airways in January. In August 2018, JetBlue raised its checked-baggage fees from $25 to $30, and bumped it up to $35 last month. There is good news, though: You can avoid both United Airlines and JetBlue’s increased fees by paying for your checked bags in advance. So if you pay any time before checking in online, the prices will remain $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second bag. Taking advantage of prepaying for your checked bags will also save you some time when you’re at the airport.
USA Today points out that discount airlines like Spirit, Allegiant, and Frontier have already been offering discounts for bags checked in advance. If you want to avoid checked-baggage fees altogether on a major carrier, try Southwest Airlines, which doesn’t charge anything for the first two bags you check.
