I walk to work in -20°C — this $30 Uniqlo base layer keeps me warm

This Uniqlo HEATTECH base layer is a life-saver in the winter — and it's only $30.

I am a walking contradiction during winter's coldest months — I can admit it! I am always cold (iron deficient? Likely), yet I refuse to give up my 10,000 steps/day outdoor walks. I grew up in Alberta, so despite my failing circulatory system, my ego says: "Alberta strong! Mind over matter!" However, if there's one thing a youth spent in 30-below taught me, it's the importance of layering. In the winter, I rarely leave home without at least three layers (base, sweater and coat). If the forecast reads -15°C or below, I bump it to four. Colder than -20°C and it's balaclava time. The trick to base layers is material > thickness. While I want warmth, the Michelin Man isn't among my style icons. Therefore, when the weather turns nasty, I often bundle up in Uniqlo's HEATTECH base layers.

Uniqlo's HEATTECH Crew Neck Long-Sleeve T-Shirt is among my most worn base layers. The long-sleeve tee is made from high-performance fabric with heat absorption, retention, and moisture-wicking properties. According to the brand, the tee is 2.25 times warmer than its regular HEATTECH line, largely thanks to the shirt's fluffy, brushed lining. The crewneck comes in four colours and sizes XS to XXL.

I have Uniqlo's original HEATTECH Crew Neck T-Shirt, and while I love it for fall and early winter, I was in the market for an even warmer base layer for ski trips and brisk mornings. The brand's ultra-warm crew neck delivers the extra warmth I need without the bulk of a thick sweater. I find it stretchy, warm and comfortable, and while I primarily wear it as a layering piece, you could easily wear it solo if you overheat.

As I live in a constant state of cold, the HEATTECH crew neck has become an essential part of my winter wardrobe. I wear it under sweaters and blazers without overheating or noticeable bulk, making it perfect for the office or evenings out.

If you run cold, the HEATTECH crew neck is a life-saver. However, if you plan to wear it on the ski hill, you'll want to ensure your other layers are removable, as you may overheat as the day goes on.
