Underwater Footage Shows La Palma Volcanic Ash Covering Marine Life
Underwater footage released October 21 shows volcanic ash from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma covering marine life in the ocean surrounding the island.
This video, filmed by IEO-CSIC, shows various sea creatures covered in ash off the coast of La Palma, and experts collecting samples to examine.
In the caption of the YouTube video, CSIC said, “The eruption of the #LaPalma volcano affects the marine ecosystem in front of the lava delta.” The lava delta was created on September 29 when the lava flow reached the sea.
By October 22, Cumbre Vieja was still erupting, over a month since volcanic activity first began. The lava had destroyed more than 2,120 buildings by October 21, according to authorities, while the molten rock flowed across more than 886 hectares (about 3.3 square miles).
