Unboxing the Huawei P40: A low-light performer
Huawei recently announced the new P40 series, the company’s first product line-up that is powered with 5G-enabled connectivity. The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro will be available in three colours – Silver Frost, Blush Gold, and Deep Sea Blue. Together with the new launch, Huawei has also partnered taxi operator ComfortDelGro and ride-hailing companies such as Tada and Ryde, with their apps further integrated into the smartphone’s official app marketplace known as AppGallery.
We got our hands on the latest P40 in Silver Frost and this is what we think.
On first impression, the phone feels pretty lightweight in your palm, and it comes with a 6.1-inch screen. In fact, it’s almost the same size as the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The P40 doesn’t come with a face unlock feature but it comes with a fingerprint sensor, which Huawei says will unlock your phone 30 per cent faster. Well, bummer, because I can’t unlock screens with the lack of my fingerprint due to a skin allergy called eczema.
Nevertheless, the Huawei P40 excels in low-light photography again, with its Leica-badged camera design. Like the previous P30 model, the P40 employs an RYYB sensor, which supposedly absorbs more light and results in better low-light performance.
However, if you’re a heavy user of Google services, you won’t be seeing any of their apps in the phones here because Google is barred from partnering with Huawei, so the Chinese tech giant can’t procure the Android license. Another bummer.
The Huawei P40 retails at S$1,048 (8GB RAM + 128 GB ROM), while the P40 Pro retails at S$1,448 (8GB RAM + 256 GB ROM).
