UN Reports Over 600,000 Impacted by Flooding in South Sudan

Over 600,000 people in South Sudan have been impacted by flooding, the United Nations reported on September 24.

“Entire communities have fled to higher ground to escape the rising waters,” said the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, Alain Noudéhou. “The number of people affected will continue to grow in the coming weeks, and many women and children who had earlier been displaced by sub-national violence are now displaced again.”

The country is still recovering from a civil war that began in 2013, and the UN says over $80 million is needed to respond to the flooding.

This footage was taken by the World Food Programme (WFP) between September 16-18 in Bor Town, located in South Sudan’s Jonglei State. The state is one of several that has been inundated after heavy rains caused the White Nile to overflow.

Neighboring Sudan has also been ravaged by flooding this year. According to the Sudanese government, the homes of nearly 830,000 people have been damaged or destroyed, and upwards of 120 have died due to flooding. Credit: WFP via Storyful
