Months of Russian occupation and fighting in Izyum, in Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast, left much of the city damaged before it was captured by Ukrainian forces in early September.
Ukrainian forces were seen on the outskirts of Izyum on September 10, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said the next day that the city in eastern Ukraine had been recaptured.
Zelensky made a surprise trip to Izyum on Wednesday, September 14, for a flag-raising ceremony over the city council headquarters.
Zelensky said on Thursday that a mass burial site had been found.
This video from journalist Sergio Olmos shows damage across the city of Izyum, the remains of Russian vehicles, and a destroyed school that Ukrainian forces said was used as a Russian military headquarters.
