Ukrainian General Staff reports nearly 1,000 Russian soldiers lost in a single day

Since beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, Russia has lost approximately 477,430 military personnel, with 970 casualties reported over the past day, Ukraine's General Staff reported on Facebook on May 8.

In addition to personnel, the Russian army has suffered losses in Ukraine as follows:

  • Tanks: 7,418 units (+13)

  • Armored combat vehicles: 14,246 units (+19)

  • Artillery systems: 12,317 units (+30)

  • MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket Systems): 1,057 units (+0)

  • Air defense systems: 792 units (+0)

  • Aircraft: 349 units (+0)

  • Helicopters: 325 units (+0)

  • Operational and tactical level UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles): 9,728 units (+11)

  • Cruise missiles: 2,151 units (+2)

  • Ships/boats: 26 units (+0)

  • Submarines: 1 unit (+0)

  • Automotive vehicles and tankers: 16,549 units (+40)

  • Special equipment: 2,019 units (+2)

Russian losses in the war against Ukraine

On February 27, Andriy Kovalev, spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, clarified that the total losses of the occupying forces, as published by the General Staff, encompass two primary categories of losses incurred by the enemy during hostilities: irrecoverable losses and combat sanitary losses.

In February, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Russian losses tallied up to 180,000 killed and as many as half a million wounded.

Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Troops Group, said that 85% of Russian losses, including personnel and equipment, were concentrated in the eastern sector on April 25.

On April 27, UK Minister of State for the Armed Forces Leo Docherty stated that around 450,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine, as per UK estimates.

As of May 3, 2024, the Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces reported total losses of the Russian army since the beginning of the full-scale invasion to be approximately 472,140 people.
