Ukraine's first lady asks Congress for weapons to fight 'Russia's Hunger Games'

STORY: Her plea comes nearly five months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and as the Kremlin's forces continue to shell the eastern and southern regions of the country.

Russia's invasion has killed thousands, displaced millions and flattened cities, particularly in Russian-speaking areas in the east and southeast of Ukraine. It has also raised global energy and food prices and raised fears of famine in poorer countries as Ukraine and Russia are both major grain producers.

Russia denies targeting civilians and has said it is conducting a "special military operation" in Ukraine.
