If your dream Christmas scenario centres around Kate Winslet’s cottage in The Holiday, then chances are you’re longing to get away somewhere cute and cosy this winter.
But thanks to lockdown 2.0, which is meant to come to an end at the beginning of December, it might feel like 99% of the places to stay in the UK are already booked up. Seriously, lockdown-induced claustrophobia has caused what feels like the biggest boom in staycations for decades.
Which is why we’ve tapped up our friends in holiday lettings to reveal the few amazing places left on their books for December 25. You’re welcome.
Red Doors Farm, Orchard Cottage, Devon
A thatched, Grade II-listed stone cottage that’s pretty much perfect for a family get together this holiday, from the large, oak-beamed lounge with log burning stove to the heated, indoor swimming pool. A welcome hamper of goodies and xmas decorations are the icing on the (Christmas) cake.

You’ll have a cool yule by the sea at this architect-designed detached cottage in the picturesque Outer Hebrides. If you can drag yourself away from the large cathedral window with unbroken sea views, try hiking the coastal path which runs just by the cottage and exploring nearby Stornoway, home of Lews Castle and historic Callanish Standing Stones.

Isle of Rona Cottage, Scotland
For a truly peaceful Christmas, book this wildly remote stone cottage facing the sea and Isle of Skye. A gang of seals greets you as you draw into Big Harbour alongside friendly and knowledgeable Bill, one half of Rona’s permanent population.
