Two Killed, 10 Injured as Mississippi Highway Collapses Amid Torrential Rain

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said two people were killed and 10 injured, three of those critically, when a section of highway in George County collapsed on the night of August 30-31.

A Mississippi Highway Patrol unit posted photographs from the scene, along Highway 26 outside Lucedale.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Capt Cal Robertson told WDSU-TV the collapse may have been due to torrential rain, though investigations were at an early stage.

Officers at the scene found a hole 20-30 feet deep, Robertson said, with seven vehicles involved. “Some of these cars are stacked on top of each other," he said.
