BINTULU, June 24 — A two-hour power disruption that affected certain areas here in the early hours of yesterday morning was the work of vandals who set fire to the electrical cables at Taman Saberkas junction, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Bintulu Regional Manager Jabu Ngumbang said today.

He said in the 2am incident yesterday, the vandals also stole the electrical cables.

“The residents in Bintulu depot, Bintulu Water Board, Simpang Sebauh and surrounding areas were affected by the electricity disruption lasting nearly two hours,” Jabu said in a statement.

He said the Nyabau water treatment plant was also affected, leading to low water pressure in certain areas, including the Tanjung Kidurong Industrial Park.

He said the SEB technical team took two hours to fully restore the electricity supply to the affected areas.

Jabu said a police report has been lodged to investigate the incident, adding that SEB is increasing security patrols in the area to prevent further acts of vandalism.

He expressed his concern regarding the growing vandalism trend in Bintulu, saying that since the beginning of this year, a total of 13 cases of vandalism have been recorded compared to 11 cases reported in the whole of 2022.

“This is a worrying trend, as it indicates that these vandals are endangering their own lives without regard for personal safety for the sake of monetary gain,” he added.

Jabu also reminded the people that tampering with live electrical facilities is extremely dangerous as it can lead to flashovers, electrocution, burns, loss of life and power outage.

He said SEB has implemented various measures, including increased night patrols and the installation of remote sensors to detect unauthorised entry into its facilities.
