SINGAPORE — Two children were discovered dead at Greenridge Crescent Playground, a secluded park in the Toh Yi estate at Upper Bukit Timah, on Friday evening (21 January).

According to CNA, police said it received a call for assistance from a man at about 6.25pm on Friday.

"When police officers arrived at the scene, the man's two 11-year-old sons were found lying motionless in the vicinity of the playground and were pronounced dead at scene by a paramedic," police said.

The police have classified the case as unnatural death. Investigations are ongoing.

The Straits Times reported that officers from the police's Gurkha contingent were at the location on Saturday noon, and were seen walking inside a canal nearby and combing the forested area behind the playground.

Police vehicles were also parked along Greenridge Crescent, and officers dressed in plain clothes were spotted speaking to residents around the estate, the national broadsheet reported.

Residents of the estate told reporters that police officers came to their houses to ask if they had seen any of their neighbours going to the playground between 4pm and 7pm on Friday.

While it was not clear where the childrens’ bodies were found, CNA reported that plain clothes police officers were walking along the canal and looking into it on Saturday afternoon. Residents also said they saw authorities throwing sponge-like cushions into the canal.

At about 4.20pm, a group of people were seen offering prayers next to the canal. One of the members of the party, Mr Fong of Singapore Yin Feng Shui Funeral Services, later told CNA that the group comprised the sister of the deceased, as well as family friends.

MP urges public to refrain from speculation

Sim Ann, Member of Parliament for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, urged the public to refrain from speculation amid the police investigations.

"This is a grave tragedy, and unthinkable especially to anyone who is a parent," she wrote in a post on her Facebook page.

"I know the news is deeply shocking and upsetting to our community... I advise our residents to await official information from the Police, and seek the kind cooperation of members of the public in refraining from speculation.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the children who have lost their lives so tragically."
