Sky Cinema has released the first trailer for modern Charles Dickens adaptation Twist – and it's certainly unlike any Dickens you've seen before.
The new take on Oliver Twist stars newcomer Raff Law in the title role of Twist, alongside Lena Headey as Sikes, Rita Ora as Dodge, Sir Michael Caine as Fagin, Franz Drameh as Batesey, Sophie Simnett as Red and David Walliams as Losberne.
As shown in the trailer, the new adaptation has reimagined Oliver Twist as a heist movie, with each character given a nickname – Twist is The Artist, Fagin is The Mastermind, Sikes is The Enforcer... you get the idea.
In this version, Oliver is a streetwise artist living on the streets of London when a chance encounter with a gang of grifters, led by Ora's Dodge, sees Twist caught up in a high-stakes art heist.
The gang are attempting to steal a priceless painting from Losberne for the notorious thief Fagin and his "psychopathic" business partner Sikes.
So, don't expect a faithful adaptations of the Dickens classic, but at least Twist is trying something different. We'll just have to wait until 2021 on Sky Cinema and NOW TV to see if it was successful.
The movie also stars Noel Clarke – who was also one of the producers on Twist – and Tanya Burr.
Talking about the role before filming, Headey revealed that she was looking forward to showing a very different side to Dickens.
"I couldn't be more excited to take on the iconic character of Sikes from Oliver Twist. Flipping roles without apology or character softening is a brilliant way to breathe new life into established materials and bring it to new audiences."
Twist is set for release on Sky Cinema, NOW TV and in cinemas in 2021.
