TVLine Items: Challengers on MGM+, Toni Collette Joins Wayward and More

Now this is a perfect serve: Challengers, the tennis drama starring Zendaya, will begin streaming on MGM+ on Monday, July 29, TVLine hears.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film follows Tashi (Zendaya), a no-nonsense tennis player-turned-coach who makes her husband Art (Mike Faist) play in a challengers event to jolt him out of a recent losing streak. Tensions rise when he faces off against Patrick (Josh O’Connor), Tashi’s ex-boyfriend and his former best friend.

Challengers in its opening weekend topped the domestic box office with $15 million in ticket sales, and to date has grossed $91 million worldwide (against a reported $55 mil budget).

* Toni Collette will be a series regular in the Netflix thriller Wayward, set in a “bucolic but sinister” town while exploring the “insidious underbelly of the ‘troubled teen industry’ and the eternal struggle between one generation and the next.”

Additional cast includes creator, showrunner and EP Mae Martin (The Flight Attendant), Sarah Gadon (True Detective, Letterkenny), Brandon Jay McLaren (The Cleaning Lady, Snowfall), Sydney Topliffe and Alyvia Alyn Lind (Chucky).  Meanwhile, Patrick J. Adams (Suits), Patrick Gallagher (Big Sky) and Josh Close (Killers of The Flower Moon) are set to recur.

* Paul Giamatti will star in a Hostel TV series from Eli Roth, Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Currently in development and not attached to a platform, the show is a “modern adaptation” and reinvention of the horror film franchise.

* Steve Zahn (The White Lotus) has joined Glen Powell in the Hulu comedy Chad Powers, based on Eli Manning’s popular ESPN+ sketch, Deadline reports.

* Dear White People’s Logan Browning is the latest star to join Prime Video’s Criminal, based on the graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillip. Previously announced cast includes Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Kadeem Hardison (Teenage Bounty HuntersA Different World), Adria Arjona (Hit ManAndor) and Richard Jenkins (MonsterSix Feet Under).

* Netflix has released a trailer for The Mole Season 2, premiering Friday, June 28:
