TV Guide for March 2021: Teenage Textbook: The Series, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and more
Every month, we’ll tell you about new shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.
Overview of March's shows
March sees the beginning of the streaming battles, with Disney+'s The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, HBO GO's Justice League, BBC First's Stath Lets Flats, and even meWATCH tossing in Mind Jumpers into the mix, along with the usual plethora of shows from Netflix and Viu. Superhero fans will be glad to know that we'll also be seeing the Season 7 premiere of The Flash on Warner TV this month. But if you're a diehard Korean drama addict, you can get your fix with Summer Guys and Great Real Estate on Viu too. And on the local front, The Teenage Textbook sees a a television adaptation hitting screens on Channel 5. It's a superheroic streaming month for sure!
Teenage Textbook — The Series (2 Mar, Tuesdays 9.30pm)

Based on The Teenage Textbook, this new adaptation of the humorous novel follows the life of Mui Ee (Tan Yi Xin) as she navigates her teenhood in polytechnic. However, life isn't as straightforward as she would like it to be, especially with parents like hers. Also stars Gavin Teo, Chris Mak, Tay Ping Hui, Keagan Kang, Amy Cheng, Darren Lim, with a cameo by Randall Tan.
If you were a fan of the novel, then you might have noticed that the setting is a little different from the original's JC setting — which probably opens the door for more collaborations with fashion brands. It's not just the setting though, as this new series sprinkles in new characters, new storylines, and new conflicts. It's a gamble to stray so far from the source material, and we'll see if it pays off. As a fan, I certainly hope that it does!
The Flash (Season 7) (3 Mar, Wednesdays 9pm)

The seventh season of The Flash sees Team Flash scrambling to save Iris (Candice Patton) from an alternate "mirror dimension" even as Barry (Grant Gustin) deals with his dwindling speed. But even if they manage to defeat Mirror Master, it remains to be seen if they can undo the damage that has been done. They'll face new metas, new dangers, and a sinister new threat this season.
Thanks to the pandemic, Season 6 was truncated, which means that Season 7's first few episodes will be devoted to wrapping the storyline and primary villain of the second half of Season 6. Details of Season 7's primary villains are scant at this point, but the "Graphic Novel" style used to split up the seasons into two halves worked well in Season 6, so hopefully it'll keep up the tempo of a (probably longer) Season 7. But producers have hinted that Season 7 may not be divided as cleanly into two halves, so The Flash might surprise us yet!
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (19 Mar)

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier sees Sam (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) teaming up on a mission that takes them all over the world, even as they learn how to work with each other. But it looks like it won't just be their patience that will be pushed to its limits, because Zemo (Daniel Brühl) lurks in the shadows. Fortunately, they have allies in the form of Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell).
Like everyone else, the question on my mind is — didn't Bucky adopt the White Wolf moniker already? Why is he going by Winter Soldier again? In any case, the testosterone laden trailer promises us a series that's full of action, and decidedly different from WandaVision. Here's hoping that we see Captain America at some point in the series, too.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (18 Mar)

This new version of Justice League by Zack Snyder sees Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) teaming up to save the world from an unprecedented threat of cosmic proportions. But their greatest challenge may lie within, rather than without.
This epic, darker version of Justice League teases all the rumours we had heard about the Snyder Cut of the film, and is truly a product of our times, with so many fan petitions to see this version instead of the one that hit cinemas. It's going to be a whopping four-hour long movie though. But it looks like we're going to get to see Darkseid, Lex Luthor, and the Joker, so it's definitely worth it.
The Irregulars (26 Mar)

Supernatural crimes plague 19th-century London, and it's up to a group of teenager misfits to solve them — the Irregulars. Working at the behest of Sherlock Holmes (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) and Dr Watson (Royce Pierreson), these teens solve crimes and Holmes takes the credit for them. London will never be the same again. Also stars Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw, Jojo Macari, McKell David, and Harrison Osterfield.
Although the premise looks like it'll be a horror series, there also seems like there'll be a heavy comedy element as well, since the Irregulars don't get to enjoy the credit for their work. Executive producer Tom Bidwell has commented on how this series was born from a version of the classic detective where he's a drug addict and delinquent while a group of kids solve cases, so you never know. In any case, the children are inspired by the Baker Street Irregulars, a network of street boys that Holmes used to gather information in the stories.
