As tensions continue to rise in the US following an attempted coup on the Capitol building from Trump supporters (with Britney Spear's ex-husband being pictured amongst the mob too), the outgoing President has again snubbed the newly elected president, Joe Biden.

As well as continuing to repeat unproven claims that he only lost the election due to fraud, Trump then tweeted that he will not be attending Biden's inauguration ceremony on 20 January. "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th," he wrote. However, the tweet is no longer available to view as Twitter have decided to suspend his account permanently.

For those unfamiliar, this is an event that sees the outgoing leader welcome the newly elected President of the United States into the White House and not only is the snub potentially likely to add further fuel to the fire between Democrats and Republicans, it's also record-breaking: only three other Presidents in the past have deliberately chosen to miss the ceremony.

In 1801, John Adams (the second President of the United States) skipped Washington during the inauguration of the country's third president, Thomas Jefferson. Similarly, in 1829, John Quincy Adams also left town during Andrew Jackson's ceremony and back in 1869, Andrew Johnson chose to hold a final cabinet meeting rather than be present for the inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant.

Other incidences of outgoing presidents not being in attendance include Woodrow Wilson's exit and Warren G Harding's entrance into the White House in 1921, however this was due to Wilson's ill health. Richard Nixon resigned before Gerald Ford took over too, so he also didn't attend the inauguration ceremony. But those are the only incidences in over 200 years. So umm, yeah, this is some pretty sulky behaviour from Trump!

At Trump's inauguration (see above), former president Barrack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama were seen waving to crowds alongside Donald and Melania Trump, and Melania gifted Michelle something inside a Tiffany's jewellery box. A photograph of Michelle looking a tad puzzled by the moment was published and went viral, but the former First Lady later clarified why during an appearance on The Ellen Show.

"Never before do you get a gift, so I’m sort of like 'OK. What am I supposed to do with this gift?'" she explained. "And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I’m thinking do we take the picture with (it)? ... No staff, no one. I was like, what do you do with the box?"

So at least there won't be an awkward moments like that for Jill Biden and Melania Trump this time around? 🤷
