Police Lead Evacuation as Trump Supporters Swarm Entrances of US Capitol

Trump supporters swarmed the US Capitol building in Washington on January 6, shouting and waving an assortment of flags as Congress was set to vote to affirm Joe Biden’s Electoral College win.

Footage posted to Twitter by Matt Laslo shows a police officer leading him and another man through the Capitol building to evacuate. Additional video filmed by Laslo shows crowds of people piling into the Capitol after breaching external police lines.

At least five people died during the events, including protester Ashli Babbitt, who was fatally shot by a US Capitol Police officer as she tried (USCP) to break into a secured area of the building.

Officer Brian D Sicknick of the USCP also died as a result of the riot, and three others, named by DC Police as Rosanne Boyland, Kevin Greeson, and Benjamin Phillips, died in what were described as medical emergencies.

Police said 68 people were arrested and that officers recovered six firearms and two pipe bombs. Credit: Matt Laslo via Storyful
