Trump says he 'aced' a cognitive test a few months ago and that his 'mind is stronger now than it was 25 years ago'
Donald Trump boasted about his mental capacity, saying he "aced" a cognitive exam.
The claim came after Trump confused Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi at a campaign event on Saturday.
Haley, trailing Trump in GOP polls, then questioned Trump's mental fitness.
Former President Donald Trump is now boasting about his mental competency after he confused Nikki Haley and Nancy Pelosi during a recent campaign event.
The 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner told a crowd in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday that his "mind is stronger now than it was 25 years ago."
"A few months ago I took a cognitive test my doctor gave me," Trump said. "And I aced it."
The comment came after an earlier campaign stop in Concord, New Hampshire on Saturday during which Trump dissed the size of fellow GOP candidate Haley's crowds at her own campaign events, Business Insider reported. Then he bizarrely blamed Haley — instead of his usual target, Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi — for security lapses at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
"By the way, they never report the crowd on January 6. You know Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, you know, they — do you know they destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it. All of it, because of lots of things," Trump said.
Senior Trump campaign advisor Chris LaCivita later said "Nancy ….Nikki ….its a distinction without a difference" in a post on X.
At her campaign event later on in Keene, New Hampshire on Saturday, Haley suggested Trump, who is 77, might not be up to the task of a second presidency.
"They're saying he got confused, that he was talking about something else, he's talking about Nancy Pelosi," Haley said, BI reported. "He mentioned me multiple times in that scenario. The concern I have is — I'm not saying anything derogatory — but when you're dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can't have someone else that we question whether they're mentally fit to do this. We can't."
She also attacked 81-year-old President Joe Biden, who she said, "has changed so much in two years." In a campaign ad, Haley called him "too old."
Trump has made similar comments for several years, referring to Biden as "Sleepy Joe" since the 2020 presidential face-off. In 2019, when Biden announced his 2020 candidacy, Trump said Biden was "weak, both mentally and physically."
Though Trump has bragged about his cognitive testing for several years now, the designers behind the exam — which is not an IQ test but one typically given to seniors who may experience cognitive decline — have questioned the veracity of his claims, noting that he has boasted about correctly answering questions that are not part of the exam at all, the Washington Post reported.
