Trump Jr. on VP search: Supports Vance, dismisses other candidates
Donald Trump Jr., the adult son of former President Trump, weighed in on the highly anticipated running mate choice for his father in the upcoming election.
In a recent episode of his podcast, “Triggered,” Trump Jr. asked the live chat about their thoughts on the handful of potential vice-presidential candidates. He said his choice is Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).
“If we’re talking the VP stakes, what are you guys thinking right now?” he asked. “You know, everyone knows, I’ve sort of been for J.D. Vance.”
Other rumored candidates for the role have included North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R).
Trump Jr. discounted former Housing and Urban Development secretary Ben Carson because he was “too nice to deal with the sociopaths that we’d be dealing with.”
The former president’s son said Burgum is a “smart guy,” but thinks he would fit better as his father’s Energy Secretary.
“North Dakota. He understands that,” Trump Jr. said. “He built a really good business in tech. I think, you know, that’s someone that could actually make some money for America, for a change, rather than us just giving all our money away.”
Trump Jr. also argued that Rubio may not be his father’s best choice.
“I have a good relationship with Marco, but there is some truth about, like, you know, having someone that’s a little bit more establishment in there,” he said, warning of a potential impeachment.
“And so, there is something about having someone from outside of the establishment to sort of further protect you from that establishment,” Trump Jr. said.
Trump says he has already made his pick and will announce his running mate at the Republican National Convention, which begins July 15.
One source close to the campaign said Trump could make the announcement as soon as Wednesday at a rally near Rubio’s home city in Florida.
Trump Jr. said he plans to host live shows at the convention, even potentially with the VP pick.
“I have no inside information, obviously,” he said. “If I did, I probably wouldn’t tell you anyway.”
