The Trump Administration Will Not Have a Signature China Collection Featured in the White House
Donald Trump will not be leaving any dinnerware behind in the White House. According to CNN, the Trump administration will not have its own signature collection on display in the White House China Room.
An inside source told the outlet that the collection proposed by former first lady Melania Trump would take too long to create and cost too much. Donald Trump was said to have called off the project within the last six weeks.
While the White House China Room has only been around since 1917, every President and First Lady have been given funds for tableware, dating back to George Washington. To date, nearly every administration is represented in the collection in one way or another, notes the White House Museum.
Past collections have been paid for by the nonprofit White House Historical Association, using funds from its donors. However, an official from the association confirmed to CNN that the group "was not involved in an acquisition project related to the Trump china." Its reasoning was not revealed; although another source close to the conversation told the outlet that it had "concerns" with the collection's cost.
In 2015, the White House Historical Association footed the bill for the Obamas' $350,000 collection, which was made by Illinois-based Pickard. It contained 320 settings of 11 pieces, all shaded in Kailua Blue and inspired by the waters of Hawaii. The Bush administration's collection was also funded by the association—it totaled 4,500 pieces and cost $492,000.
