Truck Jackknifes Across Highway as Winds Rage in Southeast Wyoming

A truck battling high-speed winds “nearly took out” a highway trooper when the semi lost control and spun across a Wyoming interstate on Wednesday, January 1, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.

This highway trooper’s dashcam video shows a semi truck in the right lane jackknifing across two lanes of Interstate 25 near Cheyenne before eventually coming to rest on the left shoulder.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation said on Wednesday that both directions of I-25 near the Colorado border were closed for “light, high-profile vehicles” due to gusting winds. The closure affects vehicles “prone to being blown over” — such as vans, campers, or lightly loaded commercial vehicles — when winds reach or surpass 60 mph.

The National Weather Service (NWS) of Cheyenne said winds reached 97 mph near Crystal Lake Campground “Emkay” on Wednesday. The NWS also recorded gusts above 60 mph at more than a dozen locations across Wyoming. Credit: Wyoming Highway Patrol via Storyful
