KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 — Standard One to Form Six students and people with disabilities (PWDs) will be able to take free Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) train rides in Klang Valley under the MyRailLife initiative.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said this would alleviate the burden for close to 500,000 students and PWDs as long as they are registered with the social welfare department.

“This is part of the government's initiative to alleviate some of the burdens the people are suffering from.

“Previously a person traveling from Alor Star to Butterworth needed RM7.20 per day. So he'd need RM180 per month for transport.

“With this pass, which is for unlimited usage, we hope it will help parents who have to pay for their children's transportation save some money,” he said during a press conference at KL Sentral today.

MyRailLife is an unlimited free pass that can be used for all KTM Komuters for the Klang Valley Line, Northern Line as well and the East Coast Shuttle services.

The Klang Valley sector is the Pulau Sebang-Batu Caves-Pulau Sebang and the Port Klang-Tanjung Malim-Port Klang line.

The Northern Line comprises the Padang Rengas-Butterworth-Padang Rengas and the Butterworth-Padang Besar-Butterworth lines.

While the East Coast shuttle service is for the Gemas-Tumpat-Gemas line.

All who are eligible need only register themselves on MyRailLife through the KTM Mobile (KITS) app, KTMB website, or at your nearest KTMB station.

"I'm aware that for certain communities like those in Pahang and Kelantan, trains are an important mode for them to go to school ... like in Kelantan, more than 100 students in Kuala Geris use the Timuran Shuttle services to go to school in Dabong. This will help them with only a few steps for registration," Loke said.

"This programme will replace the Myrail5 initiative and we've also managed to increase the number of trains following the temporary closure of the Subang Skypark Link between KL Sentral and Subang airport.

"There was so much congestion from the Padang Besar line hence we needed to increase the frequency of the trains to facilitate those in Kedah and Penang who commute between states for work," he added.

Loke said with the new trains, they have increased the frequency of the Padang Besar-Butterworth line from every hour to every 20 minutes during the morning rush and in the evening the train frequency will be increased from every hour to every 30 minutes.

This has increased the trips from 26 to 36 trips between Padang Besar and Butterworth and from 12 trips to 16 trips per day for the Padang Rengas-Butterworth lines.

In order to register for the MyRailLife programme Standard One until Form Five children need to produce their MyKad, MyKid or birth certificates. For Form Six students they need the school letter as well to prove theirs in school.

The same goes for the disabled with the addition of their disabled cards. These cards can only be used by the person it's registered to and is non-transferable.
