“How to Train Your Dragon” live-action trailer recreates Toothless and Hiccup's first meeting

Mason Thames plays Hiccup, the Viking-in-the-making who befriends a dragon he's supposed to slay.

After an earlier leak online, the first How to Train Your Dragon trailer for the live-action reimagining of the animated films arrived Tuesday to show you the first encounter between a young Viking named Hiccup and the fire-breather he befriends.

The footage unveils actor Mason Thames, who starred in horror film The Black Phone opposite Ethan Hawke, as live-action Hiccup, who grows up on the Viking Isle of Berk where everyone sees dragons as monsters to be slain. (Jay Baruchel originally voiced Hiccup in the 2010 animated original.) One fateful encounter with Toothless, who's of the Night Fury breed of dragon, sparks a lifelong friendship between the two that will slowly turn Hiccup into a dragon rider.

The trailer shows the moment when the film, directed by Dean DeBlois, recreates Hiccup's meeting with Toothless, first depicted in the 2010 animated original. Hiccup has the chance to kill the creature but instead shows Toothless mercy. A scared Hiccup extends his arm to touch Toothless' snout in a famous moment from the original film, and they quickly warm up to each other.

Audiences can also preview Gerard Butler in the role of Stoick the Vast, the leader of Berk and the father of Hiccup. "When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you," Stoick tells his son.
