Train derails in 'major incident' in Scotland

A number of people were seriously injured in a train derailment on the east coast of Scotland on Wednesday (August 12).

Early media reports of fatalities have not been confirmed.

The ScotRail passenger train derailed following heavy overnight rain.

Dark smoke billowed from a wood near Stonehaven, just south of the city of Aberdeen, as police and ambulances gathered in a neighboring field.

Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, declared a major incident.

"I have just come off a call with Network Rail and the emergency services, and although details are still emerging, I am afraid to say that there are early reports of serious injuries."

Police received reports of the derailing at 0940 a.m.
