Tragedy as baby found dead in snow-covered field in Manchester
Police have launched an investigation after the body of a baby was discovered by a dog walker in a snow-covered field in Manchester.
Emergency services were called out to Ashtons Field off Cleggs Lane, in Salford, at around 1pm on Wednesday afternoon.
The remains of a young baby were found on Ravenscraight Road, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said.
A forensic tent has been set up at Ashtons Field, close to the M61.
At a press conference, Chief Superintendent Neil Blackwood said the baby - referred to by the force as Baby A - was discovered by a member of the public at around 12.30pm.
He said the force had no further details but that a post-mortem would be held in the next two days.
“At this stage, we are following several lines of inquiry, and we are working with local partner agencies to understand who this baby could be, how long they have been here, and how they have sadly died,” he said.
“We know this news will devastate our communities and while we do not have all the information yet, we will do all we can to find out what happened here.
“We could urge anyone who has seen anything in the area to get in touch with us. Even a minor detail could be important.”
