In the absence of a traditional red carpet at the 2020 Emmys, Tracee Ellis Ross decided to improvise.

The actress, 47, set up a makeshift red carpet in her garden ahead of the awards ceremony, which took place virtually for the first time in its 72-year history.

Though host Jimmy Kimmel was joined by a series of guest presenters at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, he presided over an empty auditorium, with the majority of attendees and winners dialling in from their homes via video link.

This prompted Ross, who was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in Black-ish, to recreate the red carpet experience from home - complete with some fake paparazzi.

The star wore a stunning gold dress by Alexandre Vauthier for the occasion with a bold tiered skirt, complete with matching gold face mask.

She struck a series of poses on a short stretch of red fabric laid out in front of some trees in her yard as voices in the background shouted out classic red carpet questions, like “Who are you wearing?” and “What do you think of your chances [of winning]?”

Sharing the video clip on Instagram, she wrote: “I made my own red carpet for the #Emmys, complete with some camera clicks. Yes it’s a little janky, but hey—it was fun!”

Posting a series of images of her in her gold dress, she added: “How fun to get dressed up! Can’t say I miss the frenetic energy of the red carpet or wearing high heels, but boy do I miss a pretty dress!!”

Ross, who was photographed heading to a drive-through coronavirus testing centre over the weekend ahead of the event, later headed to the Staples Centre to present an award in the empty theatre.
