According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are ‘weighing up’ a raid on Premier League rivals Chelsea for England midfielder Conor Gallagher.
Spurs have done some impressive business this summer as over £150m has been splashed out on signings, with James Maddison and Micky van de Ven among their notable additions.
Ange Postecoglou’s side remain in the market for a couple more signings before the transfer window closes on Friday night.
Gallagher has emerged as an important player for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino but he has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer.
The Telegraph are reporting that ‘Tottenham are weighing up a late transfer window bid for Chelsea midfielder Gallagher, with an official offer set to be tabled for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson’.
It is suggested that the imminent arrival of Man City’s Cole Palmer ‘may open the possibility of Gallagher leaving if Spurs offer near £50 million for England international’. The report adds.
‘Tottenham may give Chelsea something to think about should they bid anywhere near £50 million for England international Gallagher.
‘It remains to be seen whether Spurs will formalise their interest in Gallagher, as the club look to beat Brentford to the signing of Forest star Johnson.
‘Sources close to the Johnson situation expect Tottenham to make an offer on Thursday, with the player keen on a move to north London.
‘The scale of Tottenham’s late business may be impacted by how many players they can offload before the window shuts. Spurs need to get rid of at least three overseas players to avoid a headache over their 25-man squad.
‘Tottenham are open to offers for Hugo Lloris, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (who has attracted interest from Manchester United), Davinson Sanchez, Bryan Gil and Ivan Perisic as they look to reduce their squad before the closure of the transfer window on Friday night.’
Johnson has also been linked with Aston Villa, Brentford and Chelsea this summer and he is reportedly valued at £50m by Nottm Forest.
Wales boss Rob Page has backed Johnson has “got to go” to Tottenham but he is a “very different player” to Harry Kane.
“I wouldn’t even talk about the Harry Kane situation and going in to fill that,” Page said. “He’s his own person and player, a different type of player. I think he’s just got to go.”
He added: “Young players today – and Brennan falls into this category – are a confident breed and he’s more than capable of playing at that level (for Tottenham).
“I think Brennan has a good support network around him. I know his dad (David), who used to play so he’s been through all this himself.
“You need that network as a young lad. I don’t believe he will get carried with it. He will stay grounded and won’t change.
“You don’t go into a club expecting to fill somebody’s else’s boots. He’s a very different player to Harry and, if he goes there, it is on his own ability and what he can offer to the team.”
