Tottenham urged to torch Chelsea deal for vital asset, as pundit ‘can’t believe’ it’s not happened already
Stan Collymore has revealed he “can’t believe” Tottenham haven’t tried to snap up Mauricio Pochettino, and he feels they should hijack Chelsea for him.
Pochettino was the best manager in Spurs’ recent history. He inspired the side to some great achievements, domestically and in Europe.
He took Tottenham to their first ever Champions League final in the 2018/19 season.
The north London outfit also only ever finished below fourth once during his tenure – his first season. Beyond that, there were two third-placed finishes and a second-placed finish.
Tottenham have finished in the league’s top four just once since the Argentine left the post. That was just last season, following a seventh-placed finish the prior campaign.
It was also Antonio Conte’s first season in charge, and seemed a good start for him to build upon. However, apparent disputes at the club this term, alongside the manager’s sensational assault on his own players, spelled the end of his tenure.
As such, Spurs have been on the hunt for a manger to take control of the side. With Pochettino out of a job, it might have seemed a perfect opportunity to bring the successful former manager back.
However, London rivals Chelsea seem to have gotten in there first, with reports suggesting he has ‘verbally agreed’ to take the job at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham urged to torch Chelsea deal
However, the deal has not been confirmed yet. Collymore thinks it’s astonishing that Tottenham haven’t attempted to recruit Pochettino and feels they should try to do so before he’s officially unveiled at Chelsea.
“I can’t believe Spurs haven’t tried to rival Chelsea for Mauricio Pochettino,” he told Caught Offside.
“He still hasn’t been confirmed as Chelsea’s new permanent boss, so if I was Daniel Levy I would go to him and say ‘we’ll offer you better terms, we’ll give you plenty of time and we’ll finally spend the money needed to bring in some top quality players.'”
Collymore did speculate on why Spurs might not have attempted to recruit their former boss.
“I don’t know if Levy’s pride is stopping him from trying to re-hire Pochettino or not, I don’t think the pair ended on really bad terms, but I don’t think it was a particularly pleasant departure either,” he added.
“I am sure there is still some frustration on Pochettino’s part over the way he was treated and how his time in London came to an end.”
Hijacking Chelsea unlikely
The likelihood of Tottenham getting one over on Chelsea in this situation seems slight. It would be difficult for the north Londoners to compete with their rivals’ financial might.
Indeed, Pochettino has likely been offered a very lucrative deal at Stamford Bridge, that would be much more difficult for Spurs to offer.
What’s more, despite the poor form of late, the squad at Chelsea might offer more in the near future. There are a lot of star players in the squad, and it’ll be an attractive prospect for a manager to have control of them.
For Tottenham, if Harry Kane is to leave, their star power feels lacking. As such, there seems more upside for Pochettino with the Blues.
