Pedro Porro has caught the attention of Tottenham Hotspur after recently playing against them in the Champions League, according to a report.

Tottenham might be in the market for a new wing-back during the January transfer window. On the right-hand side, they currently have Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

Emerson has been the preferred option this season, although there are doubts about whether he is good enough to deserve the amount of gametime he gets.

The fact that Antonio Conte has used him so much doesn’t reflect too well on Doherty or Spence. There have been suggestions that the former could quit the club in January, while the latter might need to develop elsewhere on loan after arriving in the summer.

To provide some certainty in the position, Tottenham might need to make a signing. Indeed, by bringing in an upgrade on Emerson, they would find more security in a key area of Conte’s system.

With that in mind, they have been linked with a few possible targets recently. Now, a new name to come into contention is that of Pedro Porro.

Let go of by Manchester City in the summer without ever getting to make his first-team debut, the Spaniard made his loan move to Sporting CP a permanent one.

Porro went on to feature against Tottenham in the group stage of this season’s Champions League. He lasted all 90 minutes in both meetings between the two sides.

Tottenham advanced to the knockout stage in the end – in dramatic circumstances – whereas Sporting have dropped into the Europa League. Yet Porro could have the chance to step back up to UEFA’s top competition.

According to Jornal De Noticias, Porro is now attracting interest from elite clubs in Europe.

Tottenham are among his admirers, so could give him a second chance in the Premier League.

Alternatively, he could cross the border from Portugal back to his native Spain to sign for either Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

Further afield still, Serie A side Juventus have been considering taking Porro to Italy.

Pedro Porro a costly target but Tottenham might need to invest

Whoever is going to sign him will have to make a significant investment. Porro has a release clause in his contract with Sporting worth €45million (around £39.4million).

The Lisbon-based side would not want to let him go for an amount much less than that. He has made 16 appearances for them in all competitions so far this season, and 88 in total since he joined.

At the age of 23, Porro has time to develop further, so might be worth investing in. Tottenham would have to be sure of how he would fit in before spending a significant sum, but must be aware of the importance of finding a reliable right wing-back.

From his 88 Sporting appearances, Porro has provided nine goals and 14 assists. This season, his 16 appearances have returned five assists.

For comparison, Emerson – who was born in the same year as Porro – has only contributed one assist from 18 games in 2022-23 so far.

Therefore, the Sporting star might be an upgrade, which is what Conte is hoping for. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will be willing to sanction such a deal, though.

Interestingly, after the 1-1 draw between Tottenham and Sporting in October, ex-Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas named Porro as the player he would take from the opponents.

Jenas told BT Sport at the time: “There’s a lot of talented players in the team, but if there was one I could take from this team it would be Porro. He is different class.”

Maybe his wish could come true in the future. For now, Sporting still have Porro under contract until 2025.
