Tottenham told they’re on the right path with transfer target who has ‘swagger and arrogance’
Jermain Defoe has showered praise on Tottenham target James Maddison, who he thinks should be on the plane to the World Cup thanks to his quality.
Maddison’s form has been nothing short of spectacular for much of the past year or so. Indeed, the Leicester City man bagged 12 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season.
He also found his name on the scoresheet six times in other competitions. Of his Premier League goals and assists, seven came in the last four games of last season.
Maddison has continued this season in the same vein he ended the last.
Indeed, the Englishman scored twice and assisted once in the first three games of the season. To this point, his combined tally of goals and assists is eight in 11 Premier League games.
That is three goals clear of the next best tally among his teammates.
It does seem as if Maddison might have finally outgrown the King Power. Leicester are 18th in the league, having won just three games all season.
A player of Maddison’s ilk should not have to scrap his way out of a relegation battle. There has been interest in him from a few sides of late – such as Tottenham and Newcastle United – and it might be time to go.
Defoe tips James Maddison for World Cup spot
Despite his obvious quality, and his top form of late, Maddison has only ever played one game for England. That was a substitute appearance in a 7-0 win against Montenegro.
Despite that, former Spurs man Defoe thinks Maddison should be on the plane to the World Cup.
“I think he should go [to the World Cup],” he said on the Peter Crouch Podcast.
“If you look at his numbers compared to a lot of the other players in his position, if it’s based on that then he should go.”
Phil Foden is the only English midfielder to have outshone Maddison in terms of goals and assists this season. It does seem that his form should warrant a place in the England side.
“You’re talking about that little bit of swagger and arrogance. He’s got that,” Defoe added.
“He’s one of those players, it could be the World Cup final, he would receive the ball in any area of the pitch. He’s one of those players.”
Tottenham on the right track
The likes of Tottenham, who are keen on Maddison, are clearly on the right track in pursuing a player of his quality. Spurs might be top of the pile when it comes to transfer interest, according to an expert.
They will no doubt be keeping a keen eye on whether Maddison goes to the World Cup.
Should he do so and perform, that could elevate his stock even more. However, even now, Spurs are clearly targeting a player with a lot of quality.
