Tottenham are being tipped to exploit Everton’s struggles at the wrong end of the Premier League table by snapping up a key Toffees star this month.
Spurs have been strongly linked with a move for Goodison Park No.1 Jordan Pickford to succeed Hugo Lloris over the past few months and one pundit has backed them to get a deal done.
Lloris has been responsible for three errors that led to goals this season and, despite his impressive World Cup, continues to be inconsistent in a Tottenham shirt.
The 36-year-old’s error against Aston Villa on Sunday gifted the visitors an opening goal. However, he produced some outstanding stops to keep Crystal Palace at bay in the 4-0 win at Selhurst Park just four days later.
Those inconsistencies, plus his age, have led to Spurs already eyeing his long-term replacement. And England stopper Pickford perfectly fits the bill.
At 28, Pickford is entering his prime as a goalkeeper and will also be out of contract in 18 months.
Add in the fact that the Goodison board are delaying on a new deal for the player, given their current plight, and a move to north London starts to add up.
Pickford a perfect fit for Tottenham
And former Hibernian striker Tam McManus feels that is a move Tottenham should make.
He told Football Insider: “I’ve not been convinced by Lloris for a long time now. It seems like for a few years he has been making these mistakes.
“He’s had a few this season already and I think it is time for Tottenham to look for a replacement. I look at Jordan Pickford at Everton.
“They are doing so badly, he is their best player. He should be playing for a far better side. And with everything going on with his contract, I wonder if he wants out in January.
“That’s a big thing for me, if the club won’t put the effort in then why should he?
“If an offer from Tottenham comes in now, I think Pickford would jump at it. Everton are only going in one direction and I think there will be a few players desperate to leave.”
Pickford has started all but one of Everton’s Premier League games this season, keeping just three clean sheets.
However, Spurs are not the only club showing an interest, with new Aston Villa boss Unai Emery also keen.
Signing the Three Lions stopper would arguably transform Tottenham defensively, given how Pickford is so much better with the ball at his feet than Lloris.
Spurs are back in action on Saturday when they host Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round.
