Tottenham talks progressing as plans emerge for versatile star to make three-year commitment
Tottenham Hotspur are optimistic of securing the services of defender Eric Dier for the next three seasons, according to a report.
Dier has been a Tottenham player since 2014, when he returned to England after leaving Portuguese side, Sporting CP. Since then, he has amassed more than 300 appearances in a Spurs shirt, while also establishing himself at international level with England.
Admittedly, the 29-year-old does still have some critics. But he has done enough to convince several Tottenham coaches of his worth. Therefore, club officials are now hoping he might sign a contract extension.
Currently, Dier is due to become a free agent at the end of next season. Unless that changes, Tottenham might be at risk of receiving offers for him this summer.
In order to avoid such a scenario, Tottenham are now thinking about renewing Dier’s deal. According to Football Insider, they have begun speaking to him about a longer commitment.
Tottenham want Dier to sign on until 2026, which would ensure he would be playing for them for another three seasons after the current one concludes.
The report claims Dier is happy at the club, which means talks have been positive so far. It seems Tottenham have little to fear in terms of losing their number 15.

Eric Dier due to continue with Tottenham
This season, Dier has played 30 times in all competitions, scoring twice. All of his appearances have come as a centre-back, even though he has played as a defensive midfielder at other points in his career.
Spurs have been linked with some other potential targets for their backline. However, it seems any new arrival will be to compete alongside Dier, rather than replace him.
Other than Dier, Tottenham can call upon Cristian Romero, Clement Lenglet, Davinson Sanchez, Ben Davies and Japhet Tanganga at centre-half. However, Lenglet is only on loan, while Sanchez and Tanganga are facing uncertain futures too.
Moreover, there is currently some uncertainty as to whether Antonio Conte will be continuing as their head coach beyond the expiry of his contract in June. Consequently, it is not clear which system Spurs will be using next term.
But their hierarchy clearly believe Dier is someone capable of making an impact regardless of who oversees the direction they head in over the next few seasons.
A contract until 2026 would take Dier up to the age of 32 at Tottenham. His association with the north London club has been a lengthy one and – despite previous admissions that Tottenham might not be his last club – it seems it won’t be ending any time soon.
