A second source has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could try to orchestrate a part-exchange deal with Inter Milan involving Denzel Dumfries and Emerson Royal.
Dumfries appears to be on Tottenham’s radar as they seek to upgrade their options at right-back. Currently, they are chopping and changing between Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty. Summer signing Djed Spence is yet to get much of a look in.
After starring with Inter Milan in recent years, Dumfries looks like someone who would be an upgrade on any of them. Hence, last Friday’s edition of Euro Paper Talk reported that Tottenham could send Emerson the other way as bait in order to land the Dutchman.
Now, Calciomercato.it has backed up the theory by reporting of their own information about the potential exchange deal.
The Italian website has confirmed it could be possible for Tottenham to offer cash plus Emerson in order to sign Dumfries.
However, the amount of money they will have to include in the package might be more than expected. Friday’s claims, which came from Calciomercatoweb, were that Dumfries’ valuation was €40million (around £35million).
According to Calciomercato.it, though, Inter think the former PSV star is worth €50million, which is closer to £44million.
It is not specified how much Emerson might be valued at. Tottenham spent €25million to sign him from Barcelona in the summer of 2021.
His form since then hasn’t exactly been amazing. The Brazilian has struggled for consistency and has only scored once from 58 appearances in all competitions. There have only been two assists along the way, too.
Still only 23 years old, he could have time ahead of him to improve. But Dumfries, 26, would be a more reliable option, who has experience of being in a successful side.
Denzel Dumfries would be Tottenham upgrade
Inter signed Dumfries in the summer after their most recent Serie A title win, to replace Achraf Hakimi. In his debut season last time around, he managed five goals from 45 games in all competitions, with seven assists.
This term, Dumfries’ goal and assist tallies both stand at two from 18 outings. As he approaches the peak of his career, he will hope to keep proving himself as a reliable performer.
But will that be for Inter or for Tottenham? His contract in Italy is due to run until 2025, but it will be interesting to see if he would consider a change before then.
He has never played in the Premier League before, so it would be a challenge. But he had never played in Serie A prior to his spell with Inter either, and seemed to adapt seamlessly.
The offer of Emerson the other way would give Inter a chance of replacing him, which might soften the blow. The ex-Real Betis man might be a downgrade, though, so it may not be a formula fully to their liking.
Only time will tell what the future holds for both players, but their destinies could be intertwined.
