Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly in talks to extend his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, who have told another of their midfielders to go another way by finding a new club.

Hojbjerg joined Tottenham from Southampton in the summer of 2020. He quickly became a key player for Jose Mourinho and has gone on to keep a prominent place under Antonio Conte.

So far this season, he has started 14 matches in the Premier League. In other words, he has only missed one match in the 2022-23 top flight.

He has also been making an impact in the Champions League. Starting all six of their group matches, he scored the crucial late winner against Marseille that sealed their progress to the knockout stage.

Hence, although there are rumours that Tottenham might be looking to invest in their midfield, Hojbjerg seems to have a central role in their future.

Indeed, he has even been keeping summer signing Yves Bissouma out of the team for the most part. Considering how good Bissouma was for Brighton, Hojbjerg has clearly been performing at a high standard.

Now, Tottenham want to reward him. According to Football Insider, Hojbjerg is in line to receive a new contract with the club.

His current terms are due to expire in 2025. Tottenham believe he is worthy of earning a higher wage, though, to reward his good form and fend off any other interested parties.

At present, Hojbjerg is believed to earn around £95,000 per week. In theory, he should be getting a six-figure weekly sum if he upgrades his contract.

At the age of 27, he will be making a big decision about the rest of his prime years. But Antonio Conte views him as a fundamental player, so it makes sense for him to continue in north London as long as the head coach is there (which isn’t a certainty in itself and must be taken into account).

With Hojbjerg excelling under various regimes for Tottenham, his stay could theoretically continue even beyond Conte’s own reign.

Hojbjerg to stay but Devine to go

One midfielder who is set for a more imminent departure, according to the same outlet, is Alfie Devine.

Still only 18 years old, he is yet to make his Premier League debut. However, he did score on his first appearance for the first team, in an FA Cup clash during January 2021 – during which he became their youngest ever player.

Now ready for the next stage of his development after featuring mainly at under-21 level, Devine has reportedly been told to find a club in the EFL so he can spend the rest of the season on loan away from Tottenham.

It is not yet clear where he might end up, in terms of a specific club or even league. But there should be options for him to develop beneath the Premier League.

Indeed, Football Insider‘s report claims he is already in talks over finding an agreement elsewhere.

Any exit will be temporary, though, since Tottenham retain high hopes for Devine in the future. After all, he signed a contract extension until 2027 just a couple of months ago.
