Tottenham rocked as Newcastle ready to hijack £25m midfielder signing also wanted by West Ham, Crystal Palace
Newcastle have reportedly joined the growing list of clubs, including Premier League rivals Tottenham, chasing a highly-rated Championship midfielder this summer.
Bristol City youngster Alex Scott was already known to have been on the radar of London trio Spurs, West Ham and Crystal Palace but now it looks as if the cash-rich Magpies are also in the mix for his signature.
The 19-year-old was a major target for Wolves during the January window. However, City slapped a £25million price tag on his head to ward off suitors for the England Under-20 star.
But it now appears that interest is ramping up significantly ahead of a potential summer scrap for Scott.
Tottenham, West Ham and Palace are known to have been tracking the player for some time. However, The Sun reports that Newcastle have also been sending scouts to watch Scott’s displays under Nige Pearson.
The midfielder has five assists for Bristol City so far this season and is emerging as one of the brightest young talents in England’s second tier.
The report adds that the Championship side are braced for further offers in the summer, having sold striker Antoine Semenyo to Bournemouth last summer.
Scott joined the club as a 16-year-old in 2020 from FC Guernsey. And The Sun adds that he has the perfect profile for what Eddie Howe wants to develop at St James’ Park.
Newcastle have so far refused to spend huge money on individual signings, despite their Saudi-backed takeover. And it appears that are looking to follow a similar path of letting Howe develop young talent instead.
Scott dubbed the ‘Guernsey Grealish’
Scott has actually drawn comparisons with Manchester City playmaker Jack Grealish due to his ability on the ball. Indeed, he’s already been dubbed the ‘Guernsey Grealish’.
And just last week he admitted he’d be happy to follow in Jude Bellingham’s footsteps and head abroad to continue his football education.
Scott told Bristol Live: “Jude has almost set the bar for any young lad in England to go abroad.
“I think another lad who was in our Euros squad, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, is at Borussia Dortmund too. He moved over there as a young lad at 16.
“Seeing what they’re doing, I think it motivates a lot of young lads who maybe are on a similar path.
“I think it’s becoming a lot more normal for lads from England to go abroad and get their chance. Because, obviously, it’s hard to get your chance in the Premier League at a young age over here.”
That news will not be great to the quartet of Premier League clubs chasing Scott’s signature, with a plethora of bids now expected in the summer – if the midfielder continues at his current rate of progress.
