Tottenham resurrect plans for attacker they almost signed in January, with summer transfer hard to stop
Tottenham Hotspur are being tipped to make another attempt at signing a former Premier League forward in the summer after almost bringing him in during the January transfer window.
During the winter window, Tottenham added to their squad by completing initial loan deals for Pedro Porro and Arnaut Danjuma. They also welcomed Jude Soonsup-Bell as one for the future. But there were some other deals that got away from their grasp.
For example, it has already been reported how they missed out on the signature of Gerard Deulofeu. Tottenham had virtually agreed to take him from Udinese, before a knee injury ended his hopes of returning to the Premier League.
Deulofeu is unlikely to play again this season. Instead, he should be ready to feature again by the start of the next one. Therefore, Mondo Udinese has addressed for whom he might be playing upon his return.
According to the Italian website, Tottenham cannot be ruled out as future contenders for Deulofeu’s signature. By the summer, he will only have one year remaining on his Udinese contract, so they may have to sell him.
Since Spurs only have Danjuma on loan, perhaps they could turn their attention back to Deulofeu as an alternative winger to add to their squad.
The 28-year-old has previous experience in the Premier League from his days with Everton and Watford. After proving himself again in Serie A, Tottenham could offer him the next step.
The report also refers to interest from Aston Villa, who are one of the most interested parties. However, they are unlikely to be able to offer European involvement, whereas Tottenham should be able to.
And that could be important for Deulofeu, who wants to play in the Champions League again after last doing so for Barcelona during the 2017-18 season.
Whoever the bidder is, the report indicates it will be difficult for Udinese to turn substantial offers for the Spaniard down in the summer. Their asking price isn’t yet clear, though.
Tottenham could give Deulofeu third Premier League chance
Deulofeu has scored 18 goals from 68 appearances across his time with Udinese. They are the club for whom he has scored most frequently, other than when he was with Barcelona’s B team.
Having hit his stride in Italy, it could be third time lucky for him in the Premier League. It remains to be seen how quickly he will return to form after his injury, though.
Therefore, Spurs should exercise some caution before going back in for Deulofeu. That said, the summer could present them with an ideal window of opportunity to take him.
Hence, he may still be worth the risk if the price is reasonable. Since he has adapted his game to enable him to play as a centre-forward, he may only be a depth piece in Tottenham’s plans anyway, behind Harry Kane.
Given the struggles of Richarlison since his transfer from Everton, perhaps Spurs could shake things up already. Deulofeu’s versatility may make him a useful rotation player, in theory. But only time will tell if Tottenham still think they would have a space for him.
