Tottenham will now accept just £10m to ensure they move defensive flop on this summer
Tottenham have reportedly dropped their asking price for Davinson Sanchez to just £10million as they are looking to ensure they receive a fee for him now, rather than see him move on for free next summer.
Spurs’ defence looks almost entirely different now to how it did this time last year. Indeed, in the last two games, Ange Postecoglou has utilised a back four of Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Ugodie.
Romero was the only one of those playing for Spurs a year ago – Porro was signed in the January window, Van de Ven this summer, and Ugodie has just returned from a season-long loan.
The changes have been positive, as has the shift to a flat back four under Postecoglou, rather than a five which was used under previous managers. That means some defenders are going to be left without a role, Sanchez being a member of that group.
He’s been linked with a move away throughout the summer, having played just 18 Premier League games – eight from the start – last season.
Football Insider reports Tottenham are ‘keen to offload’ the defender, who has just entered the final year of his deal. With that being said, Spurs would ‘rather sell Sanchez in this window than lose him on a free transfer’ next summer.
As such, they are apparently willing to ‘accept a cut-price offer’ of just £10million to ensure they do receive a fee for him when he leaves.
It’s not clear if there are going to be any takers. However, it was reported not long ago that ‘several teams’ had approached Tottenham for Sanchez, and that Monaco were set to make an offer.
While no offer has come in yet, the dropping of Spurs’ asking price could mean the Ligue 1 outfit or any of the several teams that are reportedly interested are prompted to make a move.
If that doesn’t happen this summer, Sanchez will almost certainly walk away for nothing, and might not make many more Tottenham appearances.
While he came on as a substitute against Brentford, he did so because of a head injury to Romero. That he’s yet to play in the two games since then suggests that appearances will be hard to come by in normal circumstances.
If Tottenham snare another central defender, as reports suggest they’re trying to, the chances of Sanchez playing will be reduced even more.
