Tottenham insider expects forgotten duo to feature in Carabao Cup; major boost as star returns to bench
Antonio Conte is being tipped to feature two forgotten Tottenham men in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
The Spurs boss looks set to give Japhet Tanganga and Djed Spence some game time in the third-round clash, while Richarlison could also be back on the bench.
That’s according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who predicts a host of changes against Forest.
Tottenham face Leeds at home three days after the game at the City Ground. And, after a gruelling run of games recently, Conte is expected to mix things up.
“I have heard some inklings that Richarlison might be back for this one,” Wenham told Football Insider.
“He won’t be able to start but I’d like to see him get some minutes. I think Fraser Forster will certainly start in goal.
“He has worked hard in training and has been praised by Conte, he hasn’t been given an opportunity as yet so he will start.
“Davinson Sanchez will come in. He hasn’t featured in recent weeks and there will be a well-earned rest for the likes of Dier and Lenglet.
“I think Tanganga could come back in, he has only played seven minutes this season. He’s been one of the unlucky ones so he has a big chance now.
Spence facing Doherty battle
Spence is pushing for his first start against the club he played on loan for last season. However, he could be set for disappointment, according to Wenham.
He added: “With the defence, I am now thinking Doherty will get the nod ahead of Spence. So you wonder where that leaves him.
“There is a chance that Doherty could start at left-back. That’s not out of the realms of possibility but I would really like to see Spence.
“A central midfield two of Skipp and Bissouma should start, I’d like to see Bissouma carry on this run of form he is enjoying.
“It would be great for him to get another 90 minutes under his belt. The forward roles will be filled by Kulusevski and Moura.
“Kane can’t play again so maybe it will be Perisic or Lucas could go up top, with Gil on the wing. I really want to see rotation in this game.”
Tottenham will be looking to bounce back from their loss to Liverpool om Sunday that saw them drop to fourth in the table.
And although changes will be made, Conte will not want to crash out of a cup competition that Spurs have a realistic chance of winning this season.
