A Serie A attacker Tottenham have tried to sign on three separate occasions has been given the green light to move this month, while talks over a second deal that’ll bring the combined cost to £75m are poised to resume, per reports.
Spurs fell to a 4-2 defeat at the Etihad on Thursday night that put multiple issues within their squad back in focus. Antonio Conte bemoaned the fact one of his sides conceded four goals in a half for the first time in his career.
The Italian manager also appeared to take a swipe at the club and Daniel Levy. Conte absolved himself of blame when asked how Tottenham can close the gap to those above them.
The inference in his reply was more money on better players needs to be spent. It’s no secret Conte is angling for new recruits and whether he pens a new contract could hinge on who – and how many – arrive.
Right wing-back and a creative attacker are among the areas Spurs need to address. Thankfully for Tottenham fans, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel on those two fronts.
Firstly, Fabrizio Romano confirmed Roma are now open to offloading creative force Nicolo Zaniolo this month.
Zaniolo to leave Roma this month; Tottenham table offer
Talks between Roma and Zaniolo over a new deal are ‘completely off’. His current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and in order to generate maximum value, Roma want to cash in right now.
Tottenham are described as being ‘well informed’ on the player’s situation. Roma are understood to be seeking around €40m (approx. £35m).
A permanent sale would be to their liking, though the Daily Mail add a loan with an obligation to buy could be satisfactory.
To that end, the Mail report Tottenham ‘have asked to take Zaniolo on loan’. Of course, they’ll also need to agree to an obligation clause worth around £35m before Roma say yes.
Roma are unlikely to relax their demands given 15 percent of the fee they’ll receive will go to Zaniolo’s former club Inter Milan through a sell-on clause.
The report adds Zaniolo has been a target for Tottenham in each of the previous three transfer windows. Sky Italia claimed talks between the player’s camp and Spurs chief Fabio Paratici were ‘progressing’ on Thursday.
Zaniolo can play in a variety of positions including attacking midfield, behind the striker or on the right wing. He’d be a valuable addition wherever Conte decides to select him.
Pedro Porro talks to resume
Elsewhere, Conte may soon land a new right wing-back in the form of Pedro Porro.
Tottenham have already tabled a bid for the 23-year-old Sporting Lisbon stand-out, though saw their effort rejected.
They attempted to include an unnamed makeweight to soften the blow financially, though Sporting have repeatedly insisted only the player’s €45m (approx. £40m) release clause will cajole them into selling.
The Mail provide a fresh update on Porro, stating talks are ‘due to resume’ over a deal very shortly.
Porro is understood to be keen on moving to north London and would represent a sizeable upgrade on Conte’s current options in the position.
Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal both flatter to deceive, while Djed Spence has barely got a look-in thus far. The latter also has loan interest from Southampton and Lyon.
Given Roma and Sporting look certain to stick to their guns over their respective valuations, a double Tottenham deal will cost around £75m combined.
