Tottenham forward’s exit ramps up with next club hopeful star signing will end their title drought
Talks involving a Tottenham star certain to leave this summer and his potential next club have intensified, while his move is being viewed as one that could end a lengthening title drought, per a report.
The upcoming summer is shaping up to be one that involves major upheaval at Tottenham. Manager Antonio Conte is out of contract and the Athletic recently reported his tenure is coming to an end.
David Ornstein subsequently provided an update on whether Mauricio Pochettino is in line for a remarkable return to north London.
Regarding the playing personnel, one man destined to leave is Brazilian veteran, Lucas Moura.
The 30-year-old will see his current contract expire in June and there are no plans in place to offer an extension.
Lucas became the subject of intense speculation linking him with an out-of-window move to Fenerbahce in late-February.
While the British winter window long since closed, the Turkish window was granted an extension until March 5 due to the devastating earthquake that struck the region.
A cut-price deal was mooted, though obviously did not come to pass. In the end, it made little sense for Spurs to sell a player who may yet play a part in their quest for top four if those ahead of him – such as Dejan Kulusevski or Son Heung-min – pick up injuries.
However, Lucas will now leave the club for nothing at season’s end and reports out of Turkey claim a move to Fenerbahce is on the cards.
Lucas demands are high, but Fenerbahce are keen
Haber 7 report Lucas is demanding a three-year deal, while his high salary will make striking an agreement with Fenerbahce difficult.
Yet the Turkish powerhouse are seemingly determined to power through and view Lucas as a ‘strong name’ capable of ending their title drought.
Fenerbahce’s last Super Lig success came way back in the 2013-14 campaign. Galatasaray, Besiktas, Istanbul Basaksehir and Trabzonspor have all been crowned kings of Turkey since then, with Fenerbahce finishing in second spot on four separate occasions.
Fenerbahce are said to have ‘intensified its close contacts’ with Lucas and his camp ahead of a summer switch. Lucas can sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs at any time given he’s entered the last six months of his deal.
In the event Lucas does leave, Tottenham will still boast a formidable frontline consisting of Harry Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Richarlison and loanee Arnaut Danjuma.
Danjuma’s loan from Villarreal contains an option to buy worth €30m (approx. £27m), per Fabrizio Romano.
