In Santa Cruz in east-central Bolivia, two dredging workers were swept away by the currents of overflowing Pirai River while trying to rescue their heavy machinery on Tuesday. Helicopters were seen searching for missing people in the flooded area.
"Unfortunately, after trying to save their heavy machinery, they got trapped by the extraordinary floodwaters and swept away. They were carrying their heavy machinery on a raft,'' a resident said.
According to local media reports, the heavy rains damaged dozens of homes and crops and cut off communities due to flooded highways.
The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (SENAMHI) issued an orange alert due to the rising water levels in Santa Cruz and Cochabamba.
